Julie has been practising art for the past 3 decades.
Classically trained, she primarily uses traditional materials to investigate themes of historical and social constructs. Raising questions concerning the disparities that existed historically and continue to exist in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, including the imbalance of wealth, those who have power in our society and the role of women.
Underpinning her making is always the role of light, the capturing of moments in time, and by its absence the shadows that reveal both form and atmosphere, containing traces of memory and emotion.

SURFACE TENSION
KUMEU ARTS, APRIL 3-27 2024
Julie Davies and Monique Ziegler explore ideas relating to social and environmental issues relevant to New Zealanders today, in their art making practices. Specifically with Surface Tension, they examine the duplicity and beauty of both natural and man made objects, from their superficial appearance to the deeper implications and undercurrents of their use and misuse.
